Landscape Artist of the Year Wildcard Experience

An original oil painting from Landscape artist of the year, on location in Keswick, Lake District

I had an amazing time as a wildcard in this series of LAotY and it was a fantastic challenge,

I’ve also been so inspired by all the other artists who took part, the talent on display was very humbling for me,

The Storyvault films team were superstars and made the production so enjoyable to be a part of.

Transcript / Notes:

We got to Derwentwater in the morning I was a bit annoyed actually, when you’re confronted with this tremendous natural beauty, its like “how can I begin to capture all that grandeur in a painting”

Painting on location can be really frustrating, especially with a time limit, I’ll get flustered and I have to remind myself that I have rules I follow, like I work from dark to light, and I work background to foreground, I use thin paint before I layer over thick paint (like jam and cream on a scone)

While I’ve got my rules and systems, I think it helps to limit the number of bad decisions I can make,

Abstraction is my friend when I’m intimidated like that, I change the question to “I’m painting a beautiful mountain, how can I make my brush work interesting” I remind myself I’m not a very good photographer but I do have texture, I have mark making and I have paint that I can try and play with.
