The Elephant Ashington

The Elephant Ashington

This original oil painting captures a grand piece of Ashington’s history, “The Elephant”.

Built in 1901 as the North Seaton Hotel, this Victorian-era coaching inn is entrenched in the folklore of Ashington, with stories of the community it served. Though time has stripped a lot of it’s stained glass from lower levels, the spirit of the building remains and I think it’s managed to defy it’s nickname: “white elephant,” which it got from the belief it was a venture destined to fail.

A pleasure to paint over a few summer evening sessions, every brushstroke is tribute to The Elephant’s quiet dignity, a tribute to the heritage of a building that deserves to be remembered.
